TOPIC : DISCIPLANARY PROBLEMS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Background
of the Study
The
issue of disciplinary problems among students is no longer considered as alienation
in one’s society. It is also widely published in mass media nowadays. Not only
students who came from urban area, this issue also involved in students who
came from rural area. As we can see today, these indiscipline students are
mostly the students who were weak in their study. Despite of that fact, it
cannot be denied that the excellent students in their study also not excluded
to become a part of these indiscipline students.
Through
this study, it leads me to a clear glance on the issue of disciplinary problems
among IIUM students. I also was able to see the interrelated factors that can
be retrieved when approaching this kind of students. The real situation that
takes place on student’s behaviour will reveal thousands of secrets that lie
within. This includes the story of their life, routines, social interaction,
family background and others. Besides, it is a good way in understanding the
real definition of their world which is definitely different with me.
In
addition, this study is important in order to identify what are the factors
that lead these students to commit with disciplinary problems. It is best for
me to identify behind their problems and know the reasons why these students
commit with disciplinary problems. Different people have different behaviour.
Thus, in this context, it reveals that students commit various type of
misconduct behaviour for example dress code, long hair and smoking. Disciplinary
issues are serious problem because it can be connected with the punishment of
people who break rules. These student who involved in this problem is actually
fail to follow the rules and regulations that amended by the university.
Research
Question
This
study is conducted to contribute a new knowledge and information about
student’s characteristics and behaviour in the field of Sociology and
Anthropology. The contributions of this study will be discovered through the
research question and research objective. The research question is:
1. What
are the causes of disciplinary problems among IIUM students?
2. What
are the effects of punishment towards these students?
3.
What types of misconduct behaviour that these
students involved the most?
Objectives
This
research is expected to achieve three different objectives. They are:
1. To
study the reasons of why students can engage in this problem.
2. To
identify the impacts of being punishment toward these students.
3.
To know what kind of misconduct behaviour that
often done by these students.
Research
Methodologies
In
every research, there may involve both qualitative as well as quantitative
techniques in order to reduce limitations of each. The qualitative research is
seen as subjective, instructed and reliable but provides much data and usually
considered to be more valid than quantitative research. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision
making, not just what, where, when. It much more likes an
interviews and case studies and deals generally with much smaller numbers.
Quantitative
research methodology in the other hand is generally regarded as objective,
structured and reliable but over – systematic and lacking in validity. It is a research method that relies less on interviews,
observations, and small numbers of questionnaires, focus groups, subjective
reports and case studies but is much more focused on the collection and
analysis of numerical data and statistics.
In this research, I will use the qualitative techniques
mostly such as conducting an interview and survey on random sampling among IIUM
students. The main research objective is to understand deeply, observed and
identified the behaviour of this university student. Therefore, research
methods and methodology is the overall plan for obtaining answers to the
research questions.
Sample
and population
In this study, qualitative approach will take
place in which I will make an in depth interview with roughly about 10 respondents.
Ten
students from International Islamic University Malaysia are chosen to be the
population of this study. The students that are chosen from this Kulliyyah
consist of students from the Kuliyyah Engineering, Kuliyyah Islamic Revealed
Knowledge and Human Sciences, Kuliyyah of AIKOL, and Kuliyyah of Architecture.
Random sampling will be conducted in my research
in order to take note their experiences, opinions and causes that lead them to
engage in this problem. In random sampling, each item or element of the population has an
equal chance of being chosen at each draw.
The
three main advantages of sampling are that the cost is lower, data collection
is faster, and since the data set is smaller it is possible to ensure
homogeneity and to improve the accuracy and quality of the data.
Data collection and data analysis
In – depth interview will be conducted in
order to fulfil the task. As it is a research which deals with feeling,
experience and personal thing, therefore, it is consider as a very sensitive
issues as it is related with respondent’s sensitivity.
Respondents are also asked to give their comments and opinion on the situations that occur in their life. From this, their
behaviour and attitudes as indiscipline students will be revealed in a better way.
Our interviews will include
question that related to our topic which is the causes of them broken the rules
and regulations of university. Questions such as their experience, educational
background, family members and their expectations will be asked in order to
fulfil the task given. While conducting the research, we had faced several
obstacles such as limited number of references due to the sensitive issues.
There are not many students are found to cooperate in this research. They refused
to cooperate in answering the questions.
Significance
of Study
Why
I choosing this topic is because thus issue have been increasing in Malaysia
today and became the greatest problems. The growing of indiscipline students
haunting our society today, especially when the authorities cannot control
them. So, this study is important in not only contributing a new knowledge in
the field of Sociology and Anthropology but at the same time giving lots of
benefits to the society as a whole.
This
study is expected to contribute to the university administration which here to
provide support and information for the university’s disciplinary polices.
Thus, it will help university administrator identify and discover the problem
of these indiscipline students and at the same time it will bring to a safe and
secure learning environment for all members of the campus community.
Last
but not least, this study is expected to contribute a new part of knowledge to
the field of Sociology and Anthropology. It can be used as a reference for the
future researchers in contributing more knowledge about this kind of issue.
Research
Finding
Based
on the interview and survey that has been conducted, I have questioned about 10
students who I seen sitting in the cafe, class and library. Their ages are
between 19 to 24 years old. Majority of them are the citizens of this country.
From the 10 respondents, I got to find 5 male students and 5 female students.
There is 1 of my respondents have got married. Most of my respondents came from
urban area. Exploratory studies
indicate that many variables affect student behaviour. For instance, age,
gender, and residential area have been shown to be important variables.
Based
on the survey, I found out that 6 students have been accused for disciplinary
problem. Majority of them did the mistake for 1 time only. It means that 50%
did the mistake for 1 time, 20% did the mistake for 2 times only and the rest
did that mistake for more than 3 times. So, it proved that majority of these
students will not repeat their mistake. It means that, they have learned from
their past. From those 6 respondents, most of them are male, their ages are
between 21 and 22 years old and they were come from urban area.
The
statistic of the main factors that leads students to the disciplinary problems
is influence by friends which is with 30%, lack of guidance also 30%, pressure
and stress is about 20% and self discipline also is about 20%. Thus, here it
shows that, peer group play an important role in order to build one’s character.
This is because, living in a society we may expose to the behaviour of our
friend. Friend is reflected our self. Based on interview session with my
respondents, they said that pressure and stress can lead to disciplinary because
of these students cannot face their problem such as problem in their study,
financial and family problem. Thus, they tend to break the rule in order to get
attention.
For
the next question, the respondents were asked about the most popular discipline
problem done by the students. 40%
answered from the dress code, 30% answered from the smoking, 10%
answered from the cleanliness within the campus, 10% answered from the
squatting and the other 10% answered from the misuse and missing facilities.
Mostly students were caught for dress code when they were not wearing an
appropriate attire during go to the class.
Next
question is actually want to know what will happen if disciplinary problems
cannot be prevented. 40% answered from the increasing the recalcitrant among
students, 30% answered from the leads to influence of bullies, 20% answered
from the social ill problems will happen and the other 10% answered from the
corruption. . So, in order to overcome this problem from happened, a question
about the punishment toward these students were asked. This question is wanted
to know whether the punishment will bring positive effect or negative effect.
So, based on my finding it shows that 60% of respondents answered that
punishment will bring positive effect rather than negative effect.
Lastly
the respondents were asked about the solution to overcome this problem. Parents and guardians should monitor the student's
movements to avoid them from getting involved in unhealthy activities. Besides, the
government can implement new education policy like courses on law.
Conclusion
As
the conclusion, disciplinary
problems among students are universal problem in education settings throughout
the world. We seem to relate disciplinary problems with the
influence of modernization such as the advancement of technologies, changing of
life style and culture and we also relate it to students not abiding by
religious teaching and values. So, from my research study, I can
conclude that this problem happened because of many factors. This problem also does
not belong to someone else or another community but it belong to all of us. As
we all know university’s disciplinary policies are designed to provide a safe and secure learning environment
for all members of the campus community. Unfortunately, there are times when
students run afoul of disciplinary and academic codes. So, as a good society we must
cooperate and support each other to overcome this problem. From my findings to
this study it was achieved my research objective in which I expected to study
the reasons of why students can engage in this problem, to identify the impacts
of being punishment toward these students and to know what kind of misconduct
behaviour that often done by these students. As a student, we must follow the
rules and not violate it. We should be a role model to the next batch. In short, we must learn on how to behave
properly and know the values, ethics and virtue as a student. So basically, we
as a vicegerent and slave in this world should take serious this problem as
because Allah has given us the responsibility to protect and lead the world
according to Quran and Sunnah. If we were guided by them surely we will live in
this life with peaceful and harmony.
